The End of a 7 months journey

The last view days in Kuta were just awesome as at the liberty house with the guys, filled with poker games (pssst), naughty indonesian music, beer and the beach just around the corner. My last day I spent at Christians place, swimming in the pool at midnight, some great conversations and a good laugh. Thanks man, had a great time. He is a journalist, and makes his own music. We managed to drive on a scooter together with my big backpack in the crazy traffic in Kuta and had an air mattress battle in the pool.

The last view hours I spent at the beach watching the waves and trying to process a 7 months life in total freedom, if such a thing is even possible. Was I happy to go back home? To be honest, I was not ready to go back at all and will just be back to Vienna for a visit and because I’m total broke.

At 10:30 pm Steffi and me took the flight to Singapur, Doha and then Vienna. All in all more than 20 hours in the air, eating, watching a movie and the strangeness at Doha airport.

As we arrived in Vienna it felt total strange being here after all that time, we sat down for a moment read our travel mantra and said some words about our last months on the road.
I don’t know what’s coming, where I’m going or what will happen next, but that’s nothing new anymore and doesn’t worry me a bit. I will find my way any time, but at first I will sleep and eat heaps of dark bread :) .

This world is so fantastic with all it’s wonders, good and bad days. I don’t regret one day that I did all that and to be completly honest, I’m not finished with my travels, but need a rest for now. The travel bug will bite me again soon.

Bali – back to asia, jippy!

Ubut, Bali

When Steffi and me came to Bali this night, I almost forgot how much I missed asia, the crazyness on the streets, heaps of motorbikes and tempels everywhere. The first view days we spent in Ubut, in the middle of Bali in a really beautiful place with a view over a rice field. We walked around in the village and markets, getting scamed at the market, haha … well I should have known better by now.

The next day we did a bicycle tour in the area. Wonderful views, rice fields, balinese coffee and tea tasting and the best original food in Bali. Phuu, the cycling was awesome downhill but uphill I thought my head will explode any minute. We learned about living in compounds in the villages and the balinese hindu cast system. After that we all went to the monkey forest and saw the old temple covered with moss, soooo beautiful. As it was a festival time again, we joined everybody at the temple to watch a balinese dance.

Next day Steffi, one guy we met on the cycling tour and me hired a car to see all the temples around. Villagers, children and the dogs were excited and we watched the people doing all the hand craft around Ubut, awesome stuff, wood carvers, painters, stone carvers etc.

As I decided to go to Kuta and see the surf crazyness in Bali, Steffi wanted to see Padang Bai and go snorkling, we split up again and I had my first ride on a bemo (public mini bus). Kuta I’m coming.

This world is so Darwin

Es wird der Adobe Flash Player benötigt und im Browser muss Javascript aktiviert sein..

The big oz experience ended in Darwin with a really good time there. The first view days I stayed at my CS friend Noodles house. He is a really tall oz guy who looks a little bit like Abraham Lincoln, he is a greeny like his house mates and his girlfriend Kat is lovely as. Well, what did I see there… hm… the tree of knowledge, the chineese tempel, the museum with an exhibition about the worst Cyclone in Darwin in 1974, wow… almost the whole city was destroyed back then. Noodle took me and Julia (also a couchsurfer from oz) to the creek having a swim to cool of a bit, cause Darwin has a very damp and hot climate and a lot of crocs in the creeks around. I didn’t see any crocs tough, but tasted the sweet and refreshing taste of green ants. So you just pick one of them of a tree and bite their green part of, it tastes like lemonade and the aborigines used them to make tea.

After that I moved to Gregs place, another cs. He is one of the best cooks I ever met on cs and I shared some really awesome days with him, his friends and some other cs friends. As it was the easter weekend we did what all aussies in Darwin do on easter, getting on a boat go out on the sea and having some beers. John, one of Gregs friends invited us on his boat called W.T.F. (yeah… right) for a swim and a wild ride on the donat in the water.

The next day we all went to the morning markets and to cool of we spent some time at the mall. The day after we drove to a creek having a real oz style BBQ, some satey pork and a swim in lake Alexander.

On easter monday we did another boat trip to catch some crabs in a big creek and do some fishing, yes finally I went fishing and believe it or not I catched my first fish right away, how awesome is that. As it was to small, we released it back to the sea of course. We really did catch some big crabs for dinner, but unfortunally I couldn’t taste them, that was my last day in oz and I really enjoyed it. Then we had a hell of a wild ride on the boat, yeeehaa! All of a sudden a green frog jumped in front of me on the boat in the middle of the ocean, what the hell, now it is raining frogs at the sea?

The airplane took us to Bali this night. Thanks to all and everybody I met in oz during those 2 and a half months. Especially all couchsurfers and hosts, my trip wouldn’t have been possible without you and all great people I met. Hope to be back soon one day.

Cheers mates, tita

Alice Springs and a 3 days adventure in the desert

Es wird der Adobe Flash Player benötigt und im Browser muss Javascript aktiviert sein..

The first two days I spent in Alice to get used to the outback central australian sun and to experience some real aboriginal live today. It’s not exactly a big town, filled with history and aboriginal people relaxing and socialising in the parks as part of their native culture. Besides of all that and the sun of course it looks like any other australien town. I went to see the old alice springs goal (prison), well there are two of them in alice (one closed in 1938 and the other one in 1996) and saw an exhibition about early woman pioneers in australia, interesting stuff though.

Day 1, Kings Canyon:
The next morning at 6am I started my 3 days tour to Kings Canyon, Kata Tjuta and Uluru. On the tour I made new friends with Goska from Poland, Dario and Sandro from Italy, Chris from Scotland and a bunch of english. The first day we drove about 400 km out into the desert to see Kings Canyon. Usually the desert really looks like a desert as you would imagine Australia with red dust and some dry trees. Cause of the heavy rainfalls the last weeks nature showed a different image, really green and paradise like oases. In just one month it rained the amout of a whole year. After about 2 hours of walking we took a cool bath in one of the waterholes in the canyon, very refreshing. The temprature out here at this time of the year is just 35 to 38°C otherwise it would be about 45°C.
Later that day just before sunset, we had a flat tyre, brilliant… that’s my second time in the desert and both times that happend…hmmm. Well it was more of an exciting case than danger and everybody took pictures, while some others went to get some beer for tonight.

The camp was close, Ringa our guide prepared the supper with some of us, while the others made a fire with the wood we picked up just before. Everybody got a swag (waterproof sleeping bag) and we gathered around the fireplace for food and sleeping under the stars. After a long chat with Dario about italian and austrian food and two beers I was finally tired enough to go to sleep.

Day 2, Kata Tjuta and Uluru:
Morning appell 5am … breakfast … rolling up the swags… and getting ready to move. This day was really challenging, filled with walking in Kata Tjuta (valley of the winds), visiting the cultural aboriginal center to learn about the local tribe, a short walk at Uluru and finally a shower to refresh. We finished that day with watching the sunset over Uluru and supper followed by buying art from local aboriginal women. At night we got to our todays camp sleeping under stars again and listened to Ringa singing an aboriginal lullabe and some other camp songs we sang.

Day 3, Uluru and Camels
We got up again really early to watch the sunrise over Uluru while having breakfast and as soon as the sun was out the attack of the flyes started again and won’t finish till sunset.
And because we didn’t walk enough we finished the walk around Uluru. This rock is just amazing, beautiful and filled with interesting sanctuary places and stories. The local aboriginal call the rock home, they used to live there, give birth, cook and tell their story to the next generation. Some of the places around the rock are closed to take pictures or even go there. Today the locals still practise ceremonies and ask people not to climb the rock and respect the nature. So I didn’t climb it, but left one of my small stones around instead.
In the afternoon we stoped at the camel farm just 90km out of Alice. I didn’t ride one, cause 5 minutes on a dromedar didn’t seem exciting at all and I had a better experience in Tunisa. But I read the history about this area, camel races, pioneers who crossed the desert by camel and the wild camels who live out there today.

We all got back to our backpackers and met again later in the rock bar for food and drinks. All in all it was a great experience to finally see the rock, feel it’s magic and energy, making new friends, walk in the heat, cover because of the flies everywhere, sleeping under the stars, see the light and beauty of the australien bush and aboriginal art and culture.

The day after, I decided to relaxe and stay around the hostel, say good bye to Goska, Storm, Dario and Sandro.

In the afternoon I joined Chris and the others to go to the triple j free concert in Alice. An amazing local event, well as I understood triple j is australia’s fm4 like radio station. Don’t worry I took some videos of it and had a great time beeing part of it.

Today I will leave Alice, just walked around once more at the sundays markets and getting ready for Darwin, my last stop in Australia before going to Bali. Sad already, I wish I could continue my travels, I’m not ready to go home, but also want to stay longer in one place, make a new home somewhere else, follow my intuition.

Gooday and I recon… tita

Fire Fighters, Royal Australien Air Force and about Cyclones in Townsville

Es wird der Adobe Flash Player benötigt und im Browser muss Javascript aktiviert sein..

Sometimes you don’t know what you get with couchsurfing and that can be something really interesting and out of your usual life patterns. Early, I mean really early in the morning I came to Townsville. There was not much reason to come here, it’s a stop over you do when going towards Alice Springs or you go to Magnetic Island.

John, my new cs friend was still at work, so at 5:30 in the morning I waited some time and a little bit longer at a coffee place in town. Finally John came to pick me up, his job fire fighter at the airport in Townsville. He grew up on a farm in Queensland, his relatives are originally scottish later he joined the air force for some years before he became a fire fighter. Devorced, girlfriend and 3 children.

He was really interested in hearing about austria, vienna and it’s people, so I told him as much as I knew to answer his questions.

He took me to a look out over town to see the whole coastal line, a short rainforest walk and to Townsvilles best ice cream store and man they had varities in exotic fruits I never heard about before.

We went to the night markets and John took me to the fire station and royal australien air force station (security Bravo) at the airport. Townsville secures the australien air space all over the north eastern part of the country. There is also a big army station in town, where they have their own golf course.
At the fire station I got to see the control tower, took a ride on the fire truck and some mud amphybia vehicle, cause in the rain season it gets really wet sometimes. That was fun :) .

Of course they had some old air force planes and black hawks on the station.

We finished my visit in in Townsville with some homemade pizza, austrian beer and the news report with a cyclone (rateing 3) coming our way. They secured the whole coast line and closed the beach, cause it will hit the coast early the next morning. Well I hope I will be already on the coach by then going inland to Alice Springs. Thanks John for everything, really had a good time.

Relaxing in Cairns and Kuranda

Es wird der Adobe Flash Player benötigt und im Browser muss Javascript aktiviert sein..

Not much happened in Cairns, except I really enjoyed the relaxing not much going on time there. My CS friend Guang was really nice and relaxed too. He is a young chinese/kiwi/aussie general doctor and was really great talking to.

I did some bushwalking … wow the Cairns bush is amazingly beautiful and almost untouched.

I visited Kuranda, a hippy village up in the bush with a big and beautiful waterfall, some aboriginal artwork and lot’s of tourists, besides that a magic place too.

And … yes, I watched Alice in Wonderland in 3D, that was crazy fantastic and I loved the costumes, you will love it Julia :) . And finally the caterpillar became a butterfly, took her some months to get here!!!

Leaving Cairns again I walked to the bus station at night pretty long, so on my way a car stopped and I did my first hitch hiking, bit nervous but everything was good. Thanks man that was nice, my backpack is really getting heavy, phuuu.

On the road again, Tita

Blues and Crocodile steaks in Airlie Beach

Es wird der Adobe Flash Player benötigt und im Browser muss Javascript aktiviert sein..

I got into Airlie Beach really early in the morning… hahaha. My new CS host Chris was still asleep so I waited some time at a coffee place and saw the town waking up slowly. Ahhhh what a beautiful view in front of me… the sea, islands and coconut trees. Finally I met Chris, his son David and the girlfriend of David.
Later on I walked around Airlie and the harbour, where all the ships depart to the islands and the Barrier Reef. Hmm, won’t have enough money to see it, but will do my best to enjoy my stay in Airlie. Yeah… and that’s what I did, had the most amazing crocodile and kangaroo steak at Chris bar, some fantastic blues and country songs to dance to and met some really funny Aussies to party with. Man, these Aussies are crazy as even tough they are older than 40.

The next day Chris took me around the area for a bushwalk, waterfall and to cut down a piece of sugar cane and chew on it. It was raining a lot in those 2 days, mostly without a warning one minute it’s blue sky and the next 5 seconds you have to find shelter cause the rain will soak you through.

The rest of the evening I spent at Chris bar before hopping on the bus again to Cairns.

In the bar I found an old issue of a skate magazine and in it an article about an interesting project. A guy was collecting pictures and stories about people and how they got introduced to Nirvana. Do you remember, who introduced you to Nirvana?

Well I do remember one thing, he might not have been the person who introduced me to the music cause everybody back then listened to Nirvana. But he was definitively the one who put my focus on it, Marcus Chaur. He held a silent minute in our class room with us after Kurt Coban’s death to honour him. Thanks for the memory, grunge in heaven the both of you.
